Stroke Survivors

Stroke is the third largest cause of death in Canada, and the leading cause of adult disability. This lead to a dramatic increase in stroke cases. For example, in 2009, every 4 minutes a Canadian suffered a stroke. Plus, the average personal age of individuals surviving a stroke is going down. Stroke Recovery Canada, Burlington Chapter is necessary because stroke is, by its very nature, socially isolating. After a stroke, survivors are often cut off from the world of work, recreation and fellowship by permanent physical and mental disabilities. The SRC Burlington provides a community of support and friendship, helping to rebuild lives changed forever.

Stroke Recovery Canada – Burlington Chapter

For 30 years, stroke survivors, caregivers, and families have enjoyed the ability to network, seek appropriate support and form wonderful community relationships. Well over 100 survivors and others are committed Members who continually need help to access a myriad of new and reliable support services. Since SRC Burlington receives no government or service agency funding support, we rely on the generosity of our members, and the community at large. We conduct various community fundraising programs and activities to make up the majority of our funding needs, such as bingo and cake sales. While all of our efforts try to address the growing demand for stroke survivor support (approx. 200 survivors a year leave our local hospital), we can’t satisfy any new survivor and family needs.

What Does a Stroke Survivor Need?

While providing only a portion of the overall needs for our members, we welcome new partnerships to help us fund and provide the needed services to enhance the quality of life for many more in our community.

Our existing and new Membership requires a financial subsidy to access the following services:

  • Improved Accessible Transportation (door to door services)
  • Accessible features in their home, hand railings, shower facilities, wider doors, etc.
  • Aphasia – speech therapy programs and in-home assistance
  • Physical therapy programs and in-home caregivers
  • Family counseling and support visits
  • Community outings to get adjusted to new ways for shopping, exercise and recreational needs
